“A COURTYARD SURROUNDING A HOUSE”… New project!
“A COURTYARD SURROUNDING A HOUSE”. We are showing the first external images of the project for a singular housing at Oleiros, A Coruña. An external open perimeter breaks the volume in form of a courtyards giving light to the interior of the house. It is then only understandable when relating with external spaces…

Beginning the House Son Martorell in Menorca
We are happy to begin the works in Menorca. The project consists on a complete renovation of a traditional house close to Mahón. The mares stone in the walls is maintained and renovated as the main element of the house, that gives the traditional character to the house. Contrasting to it, the white steel elements give the contemporary image to the project. Glass new elements open the house to the landscape, looking to the surroundings and far away, the sea.

Construction works begin at Z House
Brick wall, darkness and a light bulb. We are glad for beginning the construction works for our latest singular housing renovation…
We will let you know the advances… Be alert!
Beginning september with a new project!
After vacations, nothing better than new projects… This renovation consists on a apartment of aroung 80 m² where our work will be a complete demolition and new construction of all areas. With the goal of getting all light and adaptability, we only build an interior box for the bathrooms and kitchen. The rest will be open and versatil. Wooden movable doors will give the possibility of closing the spaces depending on possible needs.
Our special work will be the transformation of a obsolete terrace and its convertion into a Winter Garden, an area with many possibilities and capable of being constantly transformed. Ceramic floors and the use of wallpaper, as the design of a long wooden sit and table, try to give an in-between caracter to a conditioned space, but with the possibility of being opened completely to the great urban landscape surrounding the house.
Waiting for your comments!
Joaquín interviewed at La Opinión newspaper
“We always work on spaces with special opportunities, that can have an interesting potential either over academic and social field.”
Joaquín is interviewed today at La Opinión newspaper, talking about his work as professor at Universidad Francisco de Vitoria with the project placed in the interesting city of A Coruña and its port. Due to the movement of the main instalations outside the city, new opportunities emerge and architecture must be there!

Last renovation finished!
With this project for a musician at the center of Madrid, we are presenting the fourth part of our Multiplying Architectures. In this case, we worked over a too fragmented and dark previous situation, typical of ground floors at historical centers. After a detailed study of the existent wooden structure, our first intention was making stronger the most characteristic visual elements, that are the structure and the brick walls. Openness was the main tool for introducing light and multiply internal uses at the most public part of the housing; the most important spaces, so, fulfill the most important needs (living, dinning, kitchen) depending of furniture, but also supply infinite multiplication of posible functions. Contrasting to it, the room, bath and closets are placed on the contrary part of the house.

A house by architects for architects… Low-cost, for sure
This is one of the few occasions where architects have the opportunity for designing a house for themselves. The position of being client and designer at a time puts oneself in a complicated position of having to define and decide everything, knowing all possibilities and complexities (what is even worse, with the unbearable need of having to decide at every time), but also with all freedom for deciding anything, what is absolutely great.
What is clear is that we now understand better than ever the marvelous and at the same time complex relation between architect and client… And another thing we are sure about is that we are really happy with the results!

Last renovation with northern accent!
Today we are showing our last renovation project, still in initial phases. It is a galician singular housing, with garden and guest house that require a whole work, from their facilities to their facades and roof. In the interior, ground floor is destined to allocate common areas, with the two levels living room as the main space, in direct communication with the garden thanks to a large window that breaks the corner of the existent house and introduces garden life to the interior, one of the first goals from the beginning. Fireplace is used as a dividing element, allowing openness and spaceness, but at the same time separating functions like the living and dinning or kitchen.
Wood is chosen as the material that gives warmth to new spaces, contrasting interior life and natural textures to the sober abstract and white box that is the traditional building. Its three floors will be connected by means of the sculptural stair, a great wooden block that breaks vertically the slabs and establish diagonal visual relations among the floors, breaking so the closeness of the previous configuration.
We expect to have the project in a few weeks, and we will tell you the evolution of the construction works!

Photographies of the Whale House, in Tokyo
Here you can see the result of our last trip to Japan. Because of the finalization of the last two projects by Murashige Architects, we moved to make the photographic reports. In the case of this project that we are showing first, it is a renovation of a singular house of more than 30 years placed in a classical residential area of the outskirts of Tokyo.
One of the special things of this house is its wooden construction, made by the same only carpenter, which made easier obtaining plans and details. At the beginning, clients’ intentions were making the renovation of only one part: the dinning, the bath and other little things. But after analizing the present situation of the structure, interior and general systems, architects planned a full renovation, but under the same low-cost criteria.
“We have eliminated the walls that were not needed and besides that those that divided too much interior spaces with the goal of introduting light inside the house. The work with the rest has been mainly a change of the paper. General systems are decided to be made by commercial solutions in order to make it cheaper.
The most important element would be the central void. It was before a japanese room that could not be used by this family just because they wanted to sleep in a regular bed. The form of the void as the back of a whale was born because of the request of the client to keep the closet and at the same time getting the introduction of light. The curved line is decided by the research of the maximun reflection of light, in a deep study of the sun. The same importance has the intention of a usefull space, open to the whole family.”

Final images for our last housing design… the Duplicated Renovation
We have the final images for our Duplicated Renovation… A recreation of the rooftops of Madrid in a warm wooden interior in an attic renovation in Madrid. The bad existent situation required a complete work in its interior. Contrary to the idea of increasing horizontaly, our project uses existent height to create an elevated space, multiplying uses vertically. Contrasting with the neutral white floor and furniture, the ceiling, stairs and upper space are made by wood, giving a warm character to the interior. The wooden ceiling is the main role of the project, being designed by means of triangular geometries that reminds us to the rooftops of the traditional Madrid that can be seen from the house, breaking the visual frontier between interior and exterior. Main window is made with a double frame made by steel to be used from interior and exterior, being able to go out to a terrace with amazing views over Madrid, this time under a wooden sky.

Our presentation of MULTIPLYING ARCHITECTURES
MULTIPLYING ARCHITECTURES is a design project by idearch-studio that works on present housing, searching for elements of a minimum materiality, but maximum transformation of internal life of the house, with the goal of thinking a new way of using contemporary housing in relation with its new models of users.
We work with very simple elements, those that belong to everybody’s memory in their houses, giving them new alternative functions, and so multiplying the internal uses of the house.
So far, MULTIPLYING ARCHITECTURES has worked on next specific projects:
II. REFORMA LOFT
III. REFORMA DUPLICADA

Architecture_Cesar Galicia House
“I want a studio where to live… not a house where to work”
César Galicia
Here you can see the project for a singular housing in Madrid for the painter César Galicia, a project presently being built. It is a proposal that works on a clear division between the massiveness of the landscape and the elevated living volume. We are contrasting then a heavy materiality of concrete walls, natural stone and vegetal ground with an abstract and rational volume elevated with mettalic structure that searchs a minimum interference with the place. We are proposing a main level, a platform where to develop all main areas of housing and painting space. The wall and the courtyard separates these two main uses, and a third element, a Winter Garden, allows a new climatology to south, and external space but protected that looks to the holm oaks that surrounds the house.
The structure is thought to be made by concrete and soldered steel in the platform, and the rest by screwed beams. The rest of the constructive elements are made completely with prefabricated and screwed elements, showing everyghing to the interior, in a sincere aesthetic character that comes from the same interests of the client.
The housing then is understood as an abstract chest, a technological box that houses in its interior a rich world of light, details and imagination, as in the paintings of the same César Galicia…

Architecture_Attic Remodel in Calle Luna
This is the project for an attic renovation at Luna Street, in Madrid. The present situation will require a complete work in its interior. We will use existent high to create an elevated space. Contrasting with the white floor and furniture, the ceiling, stairs and upper space will be made in wood. Main window will be made with a double frame made of the same wood to be used from interior and exterior, being able to go out to a terrace with amazing views over Madrid.
Architecture_New Project! Loft Remodeling in Avenida de America
This is our project for a loft remodeling in Avenida de América, in Madrid… The works will consist on a complete openness of the space, only working with two main architectural elements, a continuous wooden element of stair and shelves, and two panels of plastic and steel that help the user to have multiple options in the internal use of the house.

Photography_Dabbawala Restaurant
Hi all! These are the photographies that we have made for the project of Dabbawala Restaurant, whose chef is the amazing Luca Rodi, who is appearing in the TV show Top Chef… The design, by dg architects, consisted on the remodeling of a two floor area, the Dabbawala Restoran and the Dabbawala Underground, but mainly the last one, in the ground floor, a recovered area with old brick walls… We hope you like them… and we encourage you to visit it to enjoy their spectacular food!

Visualizations_EAD Houses
These are the visualizations we have made for the EAD Houses, by BOJAUS. The project consists on two houses, based mainly on flexibility and freedom in organization of its internal spaces.
Openness is then important for the architects, who propose an open ground floor with kitchen, dining and living only separated with furniture and level changes.
On first floor, we find a courtyard that separates main bedroom and another space that can be divided with mobile partitions, changing from a only open space to three separated bedrooms.
Construction has been thought separating the image from outside to the internal perception. The structural wooden internal walls are seen from the inside providing a warm interior, and the concrete and the stucco provide protection to the wood, providing a suggestive contrast.
We hope you like the images!

Photography_Cafe Sacai, Tokyo
Here you will find our photography report of the Cafe Sacai, by Murashige Architects… from our last visit to the always surprising Tokyo!
http://www.idearch-studio.com/portfolio/cafe-sacai-tokyo_interior-2/
http://www.idearch-studio.com/portfolio/cafe-sacai-tokyo_exterior/
As the architect tell us:
“Sacai is the word for earth and means border in japanese. Our goal is experimenting with the charm of the ambiguity of sacai and also visualizating the broad time of this cafe.”
The main points that the architect emphasizes:
-The volume was directed by the JR (Japan Railway), with openness in the north face, where public area was decided to be placed. The area is 80 m² with a height of 2.7 m.
-The structure is made in steel. It tries to be as light as possible, working with interior materials and furniture so that all can be understood as layers from outside. Everything was organized by fraction and multiplicity of structural dimension.
-Everything is designed so that the internal space can be perceived with the maximum openness. The frames and the joints are designed as low as possible, and the furniture is selected depending on the height. The windows design is thought to be large and with the same criteria as structure.
We hope you like it!

Our Low-cost Remodeling!
Here is our last project! It consists on a remodeling of an old house in Madrid. The owners wanted an open space and light as the main tool. Our strategy was cleaning almost all previous traces of walls and open the space in a continuous area. Entrance, kitchen, office and living room is now joined in a unique space. As their budget was really tight, the main work was then the ceiling, where we propose a two-level wooden area where to have all storage, or hanging shelves.
We hope you like it!

Although working into different questions concerning program, place or scale, certain constant elements appear in their design. The talk will take into consideration the character of project research, fundamental for us, presenting some of these elements, and developing especifically the “emptiness as oportunity” as the core idea of the project.

Architecture_Youth Hostel Marcenado
This is our proposal for the project of a youth hostel in Madrid. In this 1st phase, the goal was reinforcing the importance of common spaces, where social relations could prevail over private character of other hostels, being a building dedicated to youth travelers. Color and low-cost materials have been our tools for creating and stablishing differences between spaces, being most of them simple and common, with the goal of the reinforcement of a dynamic and manual character that could relate with the original program of a youth hostel. In a second phase, we will work over dormitory spaces, lunch spaces and kitchens, and play and reading rooms.
Architecture_Finalists in Lima Housing Tower Competition
Today we are writing to present our awarded project, finalist in the competition for the construction of a housing tower in Lima, Perú, called to become one of the great icons in the city, and done in collaboration with the architecs Elisa Sequeros and Ignacio Senra. The competition, as a negligent organization, has been declared not awarded at the final stage, something included at basis… Regrettably, it seems that still the profession does not have the tools to avoid this acts of vandalism that leave us undefended to people that come sometimes even from our field.
Talking about the project, our proposal consists on a building with a great diversity of uses, understanding that so important is the housing and the common space. This concept is incorporated to the internal private space, exploring the intense relation that an element like this tower can have with urban surroundings. This relation is manifested through great terraces in constant relation with the internal program, becoming the core of the project. From the point of view of the materials, we understood the project as a vertical compilation of horizontal concrete slabs, having perimeter glass surfaces that allow the complete relation with the urban views from every internal space.
Even with the terrible organization, we are proud of it and we hope you like it!

Architecture_ Singular housing remodeling. Son Martorell
This is our new project, Son Martorell, a housing remodeling in Menorca, Spain.
The project works on an existing old house with different preexistences including very interesting elements. Our intention was keeping the bearing walls of the old house, wich are made of Marés, the typical kind of stone in this island. From them, we perform a series of sustraction operations to add the light steel stair that compose the house´s central space, creating a vertical communication with a clear visually intention and in what refers to connectivity. On the other hand, on the second floor we create a singular communication system both in horizontal plan and vertical section. The studio area is at the same time a nexus space between two principal rooms and the terrace. Further in the other rooms, as we can see in the cross section, we create a mezzanine to be used as a studio into the room and at the same time for having an exit to the play room.
Finally, we include the concept of a flexible house referring to distribution, as you can see in the diagrams. The rooms area can be separeted in two parts, thanks to the position of the wet areas, with the goal of having the possibility of turning it into a country house for renting.
Visualizations_Special offices
Here are a special entry for offices design. These are some of the images made lately in collaboration with Ubicca… We hope you like them!
Architecture_Our new space in Zurbano!
We are happy to present our new working space in Madrid!
The goal of the renovation was maintaining the spacious character of the place, working on floors, walls and mainly the illumination. The idea was very simple, using sincere materials that were pure and abstract… Contrasting with a almost black and white architecture, we want a colored and vivid dynamic interior.
In the future, the place will be changing depending on our own work. Photographs, models or drawings will be hanging on the walls or windows. New sketches on the black walls will constantly change the aspect of the office. Our future is the future of the space… We will show you more pictures in the future.
We really hope you like it, and feel free to visit us whenever you want!
Publications_ÁLVARO SIZA. Complete Works 1952-2013
Philip Jodidio
Hardcover
30,8 x 39 cm, 500 p.
Edition: Español, Italiano, Portugués
Facing the work of Alvaro Siza is extremely hard. The numerous publications of his projects, known by everybody, make the risk of not being able to give a new look to his work be high. Nevertheless, it is precisely the ambition of this work by Philip Jodidio what favors its success. This ambition tries to go over all his works, from 1952 to his last works in 2013. From his first works in Leca da Palmeira or the Quinta da Malagueira to his last ones in South Korea or Switzerland we understand the evolution of an architect that has known how to understand the change between the local and the global, and has trespassed their borders, thanks to the immense quality of the small and artisanal and at the same time of the technological and international.

These are the images we made for the project Wafra I, a housing tower placed in Kuwait. As we can read in their web:
“Wafra Vertical Housing introduces a new concept to urban living that adapts to the evolving lifestyle of 21st Century contemporary Kuwait. With the increasing demand for land in the city, the idea is to transform the single family-home living typology vertically where the tenants can enjoy the privacy of their own home, yet benefit from the tower’s amenities and prime location.
I International Conference MATERIAL STRATEGIES | Plant Architecture
The Research Group Arquitecturas Ocasionales [AA OO*] at Francisco de Vitoria University organizes the I International Conference MATERIAL STRATEGIES | Plant Architecture. It will be developed the 3rd and 4th October 2013. We can read in their presentation:
“Plants have been widely used as building materials both within different vernacular traditions around the world and as part of more recent proposals that attempt to take advantage of their insulating properties an their low ecological footprint. Within vernacular architecture, the use of plants as building components can be traced from the mudhifs in Irak or the hay reinforcement of rammed earth walls, up to the green roofs of Asturian teitos or Swedish stugas. Now, these vernacular techniques are being rediscoverd and becoming updated in architectural designs that seek to profit from their thermal qualities, their availability and their low enviromental impact.”

Oficinas para la Diputación de Zamora. Antonia Fernández y Pilar Peña
Oficinas para la Diputación de Zamora. / Offices for County Council in Zamora
-Duplicate the number of places with North-South orientation and reduce places with no natural light.
-Obtain diagonal views to the square and its surrounding being now part of its interior life, its routes and its rest.
-Generate a compact image corresponding to the rest of buildings but being conscious of necessities of natural lighting to offices.
Nevertheless, the building opens its vision and contact with Viriato square by means of a deep hole through the courtyard. People can enter to it from offices in first floor, being used as a representative balcony for public uses of the County Council.
Covered access space emphasizes two entrances: the main one and the turist office that has an independent running.
Concerning to the interior spaces, the courtyard is the organizer of space, creating larger pieces to north and south where open offices place larger number of workers, and two smaller ones to west and east where rooms with the use of offices and meetings are placed. Closed offices are inserted in North façade in conexion with working open space in order to place those workers that need larger privacy in their work, but without losing proximity with the rest. Versatility in internal distribution will allow the building to adapt to future changes.

“The school is designed as a continuous experience where collaborative efforts from the different educational agents (teachers, parents, society…) play an important role in the development of the school environment. We intend to create spaces, corners and details that provide as much potential as possible to encourage children’s independent activities, communication, orientation, social interaction and aesthetics.”

Proposal for the New Tourism Center in Sevilla
We are proud to present our proposal for the new Tourism Center in Sevilla made in collaboration with de diego & garcia arquitectos slp and levin arquitectura.
The design consisted on a curved surface connecting the pre-existent two levels that was able of creating an open public space and, at the same time, new closed programs that had three different functions: Tapa Museum, Visiting Center and Flamenco Museum. It deals with the need of creating daily public spaces open to citizens and at the same time a new singular point close to most known city monuments.

Publications_Coexistences. Tomorrow and Tomorrow
We are happy to announce our participation in COEXISTENCES. TOMORROW AND TOMORROW with the article “About the logic of Elevated Streets now. Projected utopia and citizens realism”. The article tries to emphasize the need for a new search of spaces of opportunity in the critical present day; contrary to the idea of architecture as building objects, now what society needs is an architecture that builds processes in infrastructural simultaneity.
“While the built and the solid are now beyond control – subject to political, financial and cultural forces in a perpetual state of flux – the same is not true of the void, perhaps the last subject about which architectural certitudes are still convincing.”
Rem Koolhaas. Urban Planning Competition for New Town of Melun-Sénart, 1987
