This is our new project, Son Martorell, a housing remodeling in Menorca, Spain.
The project works on an existing old house with different preexistences including very interesting elements. Our intention was keeping the bearing walls of the old house, wich are made of Marés, the typical kind of stone in this island. From them, we perform a series of sustraction operations to add the light steel stair that compose the house´s central space, creating a vertical communication with a clear visually intention and in what refers to connectivity. On the other hand, on the second floor we create a singular communication system both in horizontal plan and vertical section. The studio area is at the same time a nexus space between two principal rooms and the terrace. Further in the other rooms, as we can see in the cross section, we create a mezzanine to be used as a studio into the room and at the same time for having an exit to the play room.
Finally, we include the concept of a flexible house referring to distribution, as you can see in the diagrams. The rooms area can be separeted in two parts, thanks to the position of the wet areas, with the goal of having the possibility of turning it into a country house for renting.
